24-Hour Comics Day!

Hi everyone,

This weekend is 24-Hour Comics Day, so I hope you're all getting some rest, keeping your drawing arm supple and your mind limber!

We will be here and ready at Hub Comics with drawing spaces, hot coffee, a couch for those all-important 4:00 am power naps, and of course some of the greatest comics and graphic novels of all time to inspire you. All you will need to bring are art supplies and your creativity. And possibly some Visine.

Please send a confirmation email to let us know you're coming so we can reserve your spot. As of this writing, we still have space available, and you're invited to forward this email to any artists you think may like to give it a try. We encourage cartoonists of all skill levels; hell, I'm going to give it a try!

I look forward to beating the clock with you!

What we'll be providing:
- A brightly-lit, roomy comic shop and tables on which to draw, chairs on which to sit
- Some snacks, sodas, water, and pots of hot coffee, including a midnight run to the grocery store
- A couple of comfy couches for those 4-am power naps
- Lots and lots of reference material and inspiration
- A fairly clean restroom

What we will not be providing:
- Meals (although we do have a selection of delivery menus, and there are several late-open restaurants within walking distance)
- Art supplies
- Kitchen, shower or other household amenities

We'll be officially starting promptly at noon, during regular business hours, which last through 9 p.m. and resume at 10 a.m. Sunday.

Because of city regulations, no one will be allowed in between midnight and 5 a.m. We regret that if you arrive or return during that time, we will be unable to admit you.

Slightly before midnight, we'll be doing a snack run to get the fuel to get us through 'til morning.

We hope we will be able to feature your finished comics here on our website!

Big Back-to-School Sale!

Starting tomorrow -- Thursday 3 September -- and going through Labor Day, Monday 7 September, we are having a giant Back-to-School Sale.

Books (trade paperbacks, hardcovers and original graphic novels) are all 10% off. (Sale books won't count toward your buy-10-get-1-free running tally.)

Back issue comics and magazines are all 50% off (in the boxes around the store).

Back issues that were 50% off are now 75% off and comics in the dollar bin are now 50 cents each or 25 for $10!

Toys are 10% off, including new-in-stock stuff like old-school scented Strawberry Shortcake figures and Wolverine figures that include a motorcycle or a Weapon-X play set.

Come on in and see what we have! See you soon!

Upcoming events

The next few months promise to be eventful for everyone here at Hub. Specifically, there may be some re-arranging of hours and days closed in August, as we may have some filming for an upcoming movie!

August 11, 2009: Tuesday night, we will be hosting our Marvel 70th Birthday Party event! Special variants of the new Marvel Comics #1 and The Marvels Project #1 will be on sale, and my personal holy grail copy of Captain America #1 (1941) will be on display, as well as other early Marvel rarities. Come on by!

August 28-30, 2009: The Vinal Avenue Community Growing Center, around the corner from the shop, will host the 4th annual Viva La Vinal Music Festival. This year, Hub is attempting to be involved. More to come!

Wednesday, September 23: Union Square's own big-time comic artist, Joe Quinones, has gained more visibility this summer as the artist on DC's Wednesday Comics Green Lantern page. The 12-issue series ends September 23, so Joe will be on-hand to sign issues of Wednesday Comics, or other work of his, such as his cover for Hack/Slash #12, pin-up in Madman #16 or even a copy of last year's Fluff Boy! comic.

Wednesday, September 30: King Cat creator John Porcellino will be in the shop with a comics presentation from 7-9 p.m., and will be signing copies of his new book "Map of My Heart," to be published Sept. 29 by Drawn and Quarterly. See a preview of the book here (pdf), from the D&Q site.
